Week 1 Photos - Pet Edition

I decided to spend my week photographing my dog and cat to show their different personalities and relationship

I wanted to start on close up for each of my pets eyes with shallow focus because I think you can learn a lot from eyes and I didn't want anything else to distract from it. She looks peaceful, old and wise to me. (She is about 15 years old) Just no care in the world. Getting a close up clear picture of a moving cat is a difficult thing.

Today I focused on my dog. The idea was similar to the first picture, close-up, shallow focus so all you can see is the eye. I wanted her eye (the most important part to me) to be at the cross section of one of the rule of thirds. Comparing her to my cat, she seems more nervous, scared and young.

Next I wanted to show their relationship. My dog Kya gets very jealous and loves being the center of attention so my family likes to tease her by giving attention to the cat. I wanted to capture that moment.

Like I said, my dog loves attention. Today my cat Peachy Keen was sitting high on my Dad's lap but my dog wanted to be closer to my Dad obviously so she squeezed herself in. My dog is so concerned about things like this but my cat doesn't seem to get the hint or care.

Today we put one of the dogs beds in front of the fire and the cat decided to sleep in it. Our dog noticed too and decide she wanted in and they slept together. It made me happy. With the other pictures of both of them they were on opposite sides and about the same closeness to the camera but here I wanted to add a little more depth and show them physically closer to each other.

  1. Britany, I love that this week's photo's had a theme, and together told a story of their own. The first two, of the eyes of both the cat and the dog, told incredibly different stories to their characters. The extreme angle and shallow depth of field made for a very pensive cat. It almost reminded me of some Greek hero downtrodden as it thought of the troubles of tomorrow (I know, it's a different take than you mentioned). And the dog in the next picture, I wanted to see what she was seeing. Now together, the animals take on entirely different personalities than what I had conceived earlier. The hand belonging to an unknown seems to seek the cat's approval, whereas the dog seeks the hand's.
And then you captured an intimate moment with the dog leaning on the cat. But then there seems to be a certain longing in the cat in the last picture, when at last, no one is trying to give it attention. Cool stuff.

  2. 1. Nice close up! It made me want to know what the cat was looking at.
    2. Another nice close up. These first two pictures suggest a lot about personality and character.
    3. Another nice continuation. It feels like the characters are being introduced to each other.
    4. The expressions captured on their faces say loads about their personality and character. I like how the dog's head rests on the cat's back. To me, it suggests companionship, or at least the desire for companionship.
    5. This photo felt very similar to the last photo. It's nice, but visually, it feels similar. The carpet does add some nice texture to the photo.

I like how all 5 of these photos related to each other. They're fine on their own, but together, they tell an interesting story. Nice job!

  3. !!!!!!!!!! I really dig these little guys. V cute and v soft, 10/10.

I like the lines you picked out in photo #5; the dog's ear sort of frames the cat's ear in a really nice way, and the way the animals' faces both point off-camera in the same direction gives this photo an interesting sense of space and movement. Great job!

  4. The dog eye picture really stood out to me. It reminded me of the picture from the Doc, "Into the Mind" that we watched with the bird reflection in the eye. I love the shallow depth of field and the color of the fur.
