With
this film I wanted to explore how every point of view is different and that everything is not what it seems. Stand-alone it doesn’t do this but
hopefully with Sariah’s it does. I wanted to do this by focusing (physically
and metaphorically) on the guy and what his experience was.
Once
again, I was disappointed in the outcome of the project. I think the main
reason for this is I didn’t have a very clear vision of what I wanted. I also had never been to the location, neither of us had ever used the
gear before, and the weather made it uncomfortable and stressful. I wanted to
use movement and space to tell the story but I don’t feel like I did a very
good job.
The
film doesn’t have much substance to it so it is a bit short. I considered
adding more in to make it long enough but I like the flow and pacing and adding
more detracted from that to me. I think I did okay at helping the audience stay
oriented and understand what was going on. If I did it again I would like to be
more prepared before going in, to not rush the process as much, get better
sound, get more shots of the man's face and find a way to add more substance to
the story.
This project was a great experience. Because of the way we had decided to do our scenes, it felt like Britany and I were co-directing and co-DPing both films. I learned a lot about collaboration and the importance of working as a team. It was also great that we got to use the C100 to shoot our films and learn how to use the steadicam from the checkout. I really learned a lot about equipment on this shoot and the importance of practice when using equipment you are unfamiliar with. It was hard to get some of the shots, and I messed up a few of them because of my lack of experience with the equipment. Luckily, Britany was patient and understanding about things. Overall, it was a great learning experience.
